Buy Your Values UCLA Holds First Public Meeting of the Year

Representatives from multiple UCLA student organizations met recently to discuss the state of sustainability and labor rights in the global garment industry, and began to develop a plan for steering UCLA’s millions of dollars in purchasing toward local “high road” factories at their first meeting of the year.

Before the next meeting, students will be researching the purchasing procedures behind UCLA Health to understand how the student body can best exert influence on the standards for medical apparel purchasing, such as scrubs and isolation gowns. Presentations were made by UCLA Environmental Justice Now, the Garment Worker Center, and Labor 411 Board Co-chair Daniel Cardozo. Labor historian and UCLA lecturer, Dr. Caroline Luce, also participated in the discussion, helping to orient UCLA students in the broader movement for garment worker rights in Los Angeles.

Buy Your Values looks forward to connecting student groups and the UCLA Student Store with local factories soon to be approved by the ARAMP coalition.
